Trip ... Clean Up Australia Day  4 March

Participants:

  • Glenda Mann and Glenn Murphy

  • Suzanne and Lloyd Ackeroyd

What a load of rubbish this day turned out to be.

This small contingent that met at BP Caboolture could hardly have been described as fit and ready to go.  Glenda and Glenn were shaking off the effects of a week long cold and Lloyd had undergone a procedure on his knee on the previous Wednesday.  However, the weather was fine.

Our instructions were to meet at the Ranger Station at Beerburrum and receive further instructions about the area we would be cleaning up.

By 9am there were at least 50 adults and 15 children from the Caboolture, Landrover, Moreton 4WD Off Road Club, Brisbane 4x4 and Mitsubishi clubs.  It was great to see members of each club able to be identified by their club shirts.  Then it was necessary to complete the paperwork - no less than 4 separate forms – to make sure that all backsides were covered.

Peter Fowler (member of Brisbane 4x4 and Chairman CARE Sub-committee (Conservation, Access, Recreation and the Environment)) was our co-ordinator.  He was in the middle of sorting us into two main groups to work north and south of Steve Irwin Way (aka Glasshouse Mountains Road) when he received a call from Norm, who was co-ordinating the group at Mooloolah Logging Area, asking for four vehicles to head up that way.  There wasn’t four of us, but we volunteered and headed off to meet Norm near the intersection of the Highway and Steve Irwin Way.

It was at this time that we realised that it would have been a big advantage to have had access to the Club trailer.  Whilst Norm tried to get someone with a trailer from the Jeep club to join us, we ended up arranging that we would gather the rubbish into piles near a road and tell someone where it was for collection later.

We were asked to check out the small tracks off Old Caloundra Rd.  Norm suggested that we were likely to find lounge chairs and other large items without having to look very hard.

We made four rubbish heaps along Old Caloundra Rd and two more near the transmission line.  The rubbish was found no more than 50 metres in from the road.  It is here that pictures would tell more than a thousand words, but here goes.

Site 1

  • 20 tyres (car to truck, a couple on rims)

  • 150 litre chest freezer

  • Large fibreglass esky (100 litre)

  • Household rubbish

  • Large trailer load of palm fronds and trunks cut into 50cm lengths

Site 2

  • 9 tyres

  • Diff and axle

  • Roof tiles

  • Bottles

  • Springs from double mattress, chair frames, BBQ frame – all burnt

Site 3

  • 2 car doors

  • Fuel tank

  • Tailgate

  • Washing machine

  • Bed ends

  • 2 fold up chairs

  • Household rubbish

Site 4

  • 4ft step ladder

  • Plastic table

  • Battery

  • Speaker boxes

  • Household rubbish (including an addressed envelope!)

Site 5

  • 8 large bags household rubbish

  • Remains of wardrobe and other furniture

  • Cushions and household rubbish

  • Broken bottles (had been used for target practice)

  • After taking the eight we left enough to easily fill a 6 x 4 trailer.

Site 6

  • 3 drawer filing cabinet

  • 8 tyres

  • Remnants of cupboards

  • Battery

  • Household rubbish

  • Concrete

Makes you wonder doesn’t it!

By this time it was nearing 1pm and it was very hot and this not so healthy group decided to head for the Caboolture tip armed with our voucher to dump our rubbish for free.

On the way we heard from the group that was to have collected our rubbish that they were still occupied in their own area near Maleny so we reported the location of our stashes to Peter and hope that they have been collected.

Whilst it is a pity that we have to have Clean Up Australia Day, there was a sense of satisfaction in our little group that we had made a difference.  For me it was more rewarding than perhaps just picking up papers.  Whilst I didn’t see any media reports, I hope that 4WD Queensland members received some recognition for helping to clean up household and industrial rubbish in the bush.

By the way, you didn’t need a 4WD to get to any of the sites where we found the rubbish!!
