Sunday
Steve and I
arrived at Boondooma Country and Western Festival to be greeted by Errol and
Jenny Gordon and Don and Margaret Williamson.
Steve and I set up camp and then went up to the large undercover
area to listen to all the different balladeers singing which was very
entertaining. It sure was a lot of fun. Good crowd. In all there were 420
campers, mainly caravans plus 50 entertainers. Errol, Don and Steve had a good
happy hour and then we all went back for dinner with the rest of campers, $8 a
meal. It was a shame Steve and I didn’t get there earlier. It sounded like it
was a great week.
Monday
Don and Margaret headed home, Errol and Jenny and Steve and I
headed for Cania Gorge. We called in at Mumdubberra to see friends of Errol and
Jenny’s for morning tea, then off to town for some shopping. Not to forget the
traditional hot meat pie. On to Cania Gorge, great spot, set up camp, happy
hour, dinner…early night.
Tuesday
Had morning tea at camp kitchen with other campers…Hot damper,
carrot cake and billy tea. Then Errol, Jenny, Steve and I headed off to walk
through the gorge to Dripping Rock and the Overhang Rock. Back to camp for
lunch, then off to the dam. The dam is only 15% full and is used for the sub
artesian water basin, so the farmers below can use bore water for irrigation. We
gave ourselves a special treat of an ice-cream then back to camp for happy hour
and plans for
Wednesday
We left Cania Gorge and headed to Biloela, arriving about lunch
time and then visited the silo. It was a display of the pioneer days and the
machinery used back then. Very interesting. Bit of shopping then off to
Calliope. Stopped off first at the Callide power station, looked at where the
mines are and also saw their large trucks and machinery. Errol gave us plenty
of information about the place. We arrived at Calliope river camp and were met
by Gary and Gwen Davis, had happy hour then dinner and then entertainment
arranged by Errol. It was Clyde Cameron alias Uncle Arthur. We sat around for
a chat and then he started to sing a couple of Elvis songs that Gwen requested
and then a variety of songs. It was a good night and a good sing along. Thanks
Errol.
Thursday
Errol and Jenny, Gary and Gwen and Steve and I headed for
Rockhampton, did shopping, fuelled up and headed for Sarina. Stopped at St
Lawrence, 5 mins through town and you’ve seen it. Had lunch at camp spot.
Arrived at Sarina in time for happy hour, set up camp and were looking forward
to tomorrow for the start of the Corroboree.
Friday
Errol and Jenny
and Gary and Gwen went for tour through the Rum Distillery and then all of us
were off to Finch Hatton. We had a nice drive through Homebush and Marian, then
arrived at the Pinnacle Hotel at Finch Hatton. About 30 cars would have been
there for lunch. We had one of the famous Pinnacle Pies (not bad). Also at the
hotel we met Geoff and Christine Moller, who had been on the pre Corroboree
drive and said that they had a good time.
We arrived at the
Corroboree at around 1.30pm, set up camp and to our surprise the eight of us had
power and water. We had happy hour then Errol, Steve, Gary and Geoff went to
sign on for Saturdays trips. We were all looking forward to the weekend.
Thanks Errol and Jenny for showing Steve and I around before the Corroboree, the
good entertainment at Calliope. And thanks also to Gary and Gwen Davis, and
Geoff and Christine Moller for their ‘good company’.
