This trip was full of Tossers, Spinners and Splitters.
16 cars full of eager adventurers met at the airport DFO (before
it opened so the girls could get their retail therapy fix) not knowing where we
would end up that night or how we would get there.
The journey is unplanned but decided by the toss of a coin. The
head tosser (Greg) who by the way was riding shot gun with Russell Kennedy,
picks a number and that person tosses a coin to decide which way we go, e.g.
heads we go south , tails north, a toss even determined when and where we had
morning tea. We earlier drew a number from a barrel which also” volunteered” us
to do the reports. This tossing was repeated eight times.
A sweepstakes was also organised, the winner, Phil and Lyndel,
picked the closest destination to the final toss.
We ended up 350kms later at Goomburra Valley Campground via
Caboolture, North Pine Dam, Mt Mee, Kilcoy, Somerset Dam, Toogoolawah,
Cressbrook Dam, and Crow’s Nest and Toowoomba. The final toss would have taken
us to Black Duck Valley but was decided against because it is now more biased
towards motor bikes.
As usual with Greg we went up many roads I have never travelled
before and saw many beautiful places. We also saw the effects of the drought on
the dams and pastures.
Goomburra Valley Campground has brilliant facilities, the showers
are great.
The night was cool but the campfire was raging. Because of the
cold it was an early night for most people.
Sunday morning saw the splitters, one group heading up to the
lookouts for bushwalking and spectacular scenery, another back tracking to
Janowen 4WD Park for a morning’s brushing up on skills, and the balance enjoying
the sunshine at the campground.
After lunch some people made their own way back to Brisbane ahead
of the larger group which Greg lead to Spicer’s Gap and then home.
Greg always puts a lot of effort in planning his trips and this
was no exception. We had 107 possible destinations via 128 routes.
We all thank Greg for organising a truly enjoyable weekend.
