We’d partied hard at Lacey’s Creek nearby the night before,
Which meant the starting point was almost at our friends’ front door.
So that was good in terms of getting up and getting there,
But if your names are not quite right it’s not our fault we swear.

We left at 9 and 9.15 from the Dayboro hostelry

In two small groups to navigate the forests of Mount Mee.

Alan Hughston’s second group were quickly led astray

When just before the second turn our leader lost his way.

We followed steep and rutted tracks; some made me close my eyes.

The background punctuation was triumphant Lisa’s cries.

We stopped beside a rough, hard climb; Josh showed he was no coward

But somewhere far behind us they were searching still for Howard.

At late AM we stopped for morning smoko at The Gantry

A welcome chance to contemplate the contents of the pantry.

Again we hit the dirt and washed our cars with muddy water.

A lookout stop, a photo op, all smiling when they oughta.

Then Josh’s Cruiser lost all power, decided to be naughty.

We thought that never happened to the driver of a Shorty

Alan missed two further turns while Graeme listed fines.

Those little lights in both his eyes were shining dollar signs!

The CB chat turned to the times when car washing is urgent.

We want to see the video of Debbie Does Detergent.

At lunchtime those in Eric’s group said he had known the way

That Greg Dunstan had climbed The Hill and not much else to say.

We headed back, all fifteen cars, down good old Xanthorrhoea,

Down Hakea again, with Deb and Graeme at the rear.

We conquered mud, descents and hills that prompted Mike to say

He’d never had such fun on any previous Father’s Day.

Lisa honed the DAP skills she’d acquired on the course,

Chose the proper line then closed her eyes and used The Force

To Dayboro for ice cream, and then a headlight clean,

Every single vehicle had a brownish colour scheme.

Our thanks to Eric, Alan and the three who climbed The Harley

Hill and Deb and Greg for being helpful Tailend Charlie.

The vistas were spectacular; the mountain air was pure,

The wildflowers were in spring bloom; it was a splendid tour!
