Station Creek 12 - 14 June 2009

We left home just after 11am Friday but we were still the second last to arrive at the camp.  After a bit of confusion about where the turn off was it was dark by the time we arrived.  The group had a camp fire going which was very welcome.  Station Creek Camping Area is a really nice camping spot with plenty of trees and we were lucky to be able to all camp in a group as there were no bookings.

The Corbett’s were having a trial run with their new tent and  car camping box for their trip to Cape York but have decided they still need more practice.  Glenn & Lyn had upgraded to a Jayco caravan.  They must have been envious of all of us with showers on the Easter trip.

Saturday morning after a leisurely breakfast we left camp at 10.00am.  We headed down a forestry track and found Slovenski’s statue which was constructed by Jonaas Zillinskas, a timber cutter and trapeze artist in the 1940s.  The statue is covered in keys.  It says he gained a reputation as a fearless axeman and worked in the nude – a bit dangerous with an axe.  Apparently he liked the solitude.

We continued on the forest tracks to Wooli and stopped for lunch after which we found a shop selling local oysters and prawns which required a stop and then turned into an ice cream stop.  We then continued up to Minnie Water and drove about 10 klms up the beach to Sandon River.  There is a settlement on one side of the river and all the houses that were built there are only accessible by the beach or by boat from the main area of Sandon.  After that it was back to camp for happy hour.  That night after happy hour quite a few people ate around the camp fire as it was quite cold.

On Sunday Glenn asked who wanted to head off to Coffs Harbour but everyone elected to have a lazy day.  We all walked over to the beach and then later drove down to the beach and across a shallow creek to Pebbly Beach which is a really nice campsite overlooking the beach.  There were a couple of fishermen but no fish.

After lunch quite a few of the men decided to go for a drive around the forest tracks.  They all came back pretty muddy but all had a good time playing in the mud.  I believe Ian Petty in his Discovery had to be pulled out of the mud by a Pajero and Glenn apparently ran over a python which got very upset and tried to attack the wheels of Ian’s Discovery.  That night we had a communal dinner around the camp fire.

Monday morning after packing up we all headed home.  Thanks to Glen and Lyn for a really great weekend and to all on the trip for making it so enjoyable.
