Border Ranges Day Trip - August 13 '08 (EKKA Holiday)Participants: Eric & Helga Newmann (Trip
Leader) Debbie Doherty and Graeme Clarke View a bucket of photos here, courtesy of Josh Feek! What a wonderful way to break up a monotonous week of work by driving around some of the most beautiful country in South East Queensland. The morning was a very early, 8am start at McDonalds Yamanto, most of us would normally be on the busy roads to work by now, but today even though early, was a day of sight seeing and being with our friends. By the time we were ready to leave approx 8.30 everyone had fuelled up with breakfast and petrol. Normally spring would be starting to show its arrival but not this time, it was cold. While the convoy followed through to Boonah, the conversation was all about Tasmania where Greg and Sue Dunstan had just spent a glorious holiday and everyone was sharing their experiences. Even though some of us hadn’t been there it was nice to hear of their adventures and what to expect should we should venture that way. Cannon Creek Road led the way to some fantastic views of Mt Maroon, Mt Barney and beyond. Even though Graeme & I had been through this area only 6 weeks ago it is amazing how time can change things. The area was a lot dryer to what it was in July. Crossing the bitumen we headed up Newmann Road to Mt Barney National Park, where we had morning tea and took in the views, giving us the opportunity to finally meet some of our newest members to the club. Even though it wasn’t a rough track a couple of us ladies found it bumpier than others. Graeme did his very best to make the ride as smooth as possible for me but considering this was his first time driving my Pajero shortie, he sometimes thought he was in a Dakar rally and was very tempted to see what she could do. A bit different to the mighty Triton. After a brief comfort stop at Koreelah State Forest, we met up with Nev & Pat Sharman (who were camping at Queen Mary Falls) at “The Head” before the Condamine Gorge. The tracks had dried out considerably, allowing us to take in the scenery instead of concentrating of what can be a slippery road. After 14 water crossings we detoured via Killarney, as the bridge near the Meat works was in repair from the March 08 floods, this allowed some members to call in to buy lunch and the “PIE”. The rest of the convoy continued to Dag and Queen Mary Falls, where we all stopped for a well deserved break. Ding Ding!!!!! went Trip Leader Eric Newman at 1.45pm, to pack up our troubles and head down the mountain, with a brief stop for a photo shoot at the near by lookout. We headed down the mountain to Lake Moogerah, via some majestic country side to Peaks Crossing and back to Yamanto where the majority of the members departed to contemplate the next day at work while the rest of us descended on McDonalds for the traditional “ICE CREAM” before heading home. Huge thanks to Eric and Helga for a delightful day out, and to all those who attended. Debbie Doherty Back to Top
