
Simpson Desert Crossing
Trip Outline; Travel west from Brisbane for 3 days to Innamincka, on the South Australian border.
The trip officially starts here on 1st June and we can meet here if you want to leave Brisbane at different time.
Camp on the Innamincka common for 2 nights, visit the Burke and Wills dig tree.
Travel south on the Strzeleki track to Camerons Corner, (border post between QLD, SA, NSW)
Travel south on Strzeleki track to Lyndhurst, then north to Farina (town ruin on the Gahn train line)
North to Maree then west on the Oodnadatta track, camping at Coward springs
West on Oodnadatta track then south west to Arkaringa station, camp 2 nights, visit painted hills
Back to Oodnadatta for fuel and provisions, and north to Mt Dare station, camp and fuel
Head east on the French line, camp 3 nights across the Simpson Desert, stop at Dalhousie springs, turn south onto Rigg road and loop back to French line,
Stop at Poeppel corner, then east on QAA line to Big Red, then on to Birdsville
2 nights in Birdsville, then 3 nights back to Brisbane
You can go your own way from Birdsville if you don't want to go straight back to Brisbane.
We should be back in Birdsville by 13 june.
Grade of Trip: mostly outback touring, easy /medium, with some hard dune crossings
Suitable for : DAP required. Recovery on soft dune may be required.
Limit of 6 vehicles in total
Requirements: Tent camping only, must be fully self sufficient and able to carry water and fuel for 3 days and 600k across desert.
Need recovery gear and a sand flag. Desirable to carry some fire wood for camping in the desert as it will get cold at night (down to 0 degrees)
No mobile phone coverage in the desert.
Must obtain a Desert Parks Pass from SA national parks to camp and cross the desert, cost $198.
Should carry 40 to 60 litres of water and 140 to160 litres of fuel depending on vehicle.
Your vehicle must be in good condition, and you must carry basic spare parts. Mechanical knowledge very desirable.
