Jimna is the most northern part of the Somerset Region –40km north of Kilcoy, QLD. Jimna is home to the Heritage Listed Jimna Fire Tower, reportedly the tallest 3-pole timber fire tower in the Southern Hemisphere (presently closed as restoration repair work is underway).
Jimna Base Camp is the old Jimna State School. After closing in 2009, the school sports oval was converted into a 2.5-acre, flat-level, unpowered campground with amenity blocks that offer refreshing hot showers and flush toilets. In total, it offers 6-acres of quiet seclusion, right in the heart of the township of Jimna. It is kept as a well-known secret amongst its visitors.
For optimal mobile reception, Optus offers full-strength 4G. However, Telstra reception can be inconsistent. Some phones may have good or limited signal, whilst others may experience no reception at all.
Important to note is that there are no fuel stations in Jimna – no shops – no ATMs – no anything – just a wonderful, tiny historic village from the timber milling and gold mining days of early Australia. However, on weekends, Jimna Base Camp opens the Caffeine Injection Kiosk, which stocks bagged firewood, 5kg ice, espresso coffee, cold drinks, ice creams and snacks. It is located directly beneath the ol’ school building adjacent to the main car park as you arrive. There is also a small community operated museum that opens most days, located just a short walk from Base Camp. Kilcoy is the nearest place to get all your main supplies and fuel.
